There is a nervous atmosphere around Goodison Park this afternoon after Everton's lacklustre start to the season. Hello and welcome to our LIVE text commentary of the Premier League fixture between Everton and AFC Bournemouth at Goodison Park.
The two sides will be looking to kick-start their campaigns this afternoon, with both currently sat in the relegation zone after five matches of the new season.
Ronald Koeman’s side are 18th in the table with four points to their name. The Toffees have already faced four of last season’s top six, however, which could be one of the reasons for their below-par start. A positive for Everton was that they secured their first victory since mid-August on Wednesday after convincingly beating Sunderland 3-0 in the Carabao Cup, with two goals from Dominic Calvert-Lewin and one from Oumar Niasse.
After losing their opening four Premier League matches, it has been an uplifting week after a disappointing start for Eddie Howe’s men. Bournemouth secured their first three points last Friday courtesy of a 2-1 victory over Brighton, before following it up by defeating the same opposition in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday thanks to an extra-time strike from Joshua King.
Both teams recorded one victory each in the two matches between these sides last season. However, it was the contest at Goodison Park which will be remembered as one of the best games from that campaign as a nine-goal thriller saw Everton win 6-3. Luckily for the Cherries, none of the scorers from that day will feature for the home side in this afternoon’s clash.
HEAD TO HEAD: Everton and Bournemouth have faced each other five times in the last two years with the Toffees winning on three occasions and the Cherries once, whilst the other contest ended as a draw.
There’s just over 15 minutes to go until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams line-up…
Ronald Koeman makes three changes from Everton’s Premier League defeat against Manchester United, with Mason Holgate, Davy Klaassen and Dominic Calvert-Lewin coming into the starting eleven. Wayne Rooney makes his 400th Premier League start this afternoon.
The teams walk out of the tunnel and are greeted by a rapturous reception from an expectant Goodison Park crowd. The game will get underway shortly.
HALF-TIME - EVERTON 0-0 AFC BOURNEMOUTH - A first-half to forget here at Goodison Park, as both teams are still trying to figure each other out as they search for a breakthrough. Dominic Calvert-Lewin had the best chance of the half, with his header drifting past the post, but the main talking point will be Rooney's collision with Simon Francis. Was it a deliberate elbow from Bournemouth's captain?
Eddie Howe has also made three changes to his side, with former Everton player Dan Gosling, Jordon Ibe and Junior Stanislas being brought into Bournemouth's starting eleven.
We are approaching the second-half at Goodison Park, in what is a big 45 minutes for both managers after slow starts from each side so far this campaign.
FULL-TIME – EVERTON 2-1 AFC BOURNEMOUTH – A brace from substitute Oumar Niasse secures Everton’s first three points since the opening day of the season at Goodison Park. After a first-half of few chances, Bournemouth scored the opening goal shortly after the break thanks to a clinical finish from Joshua King. Jermain Defoe had a brilliant opportunity to score a second, but Jordan Pickford saved superbly. It was the introduction of Tom Davies and Oumar Niasse which really transformed the game for the home side, with both combining for Everton’s two goals this afternoon. Firstly, a perfect pass from Davies found Niasse, who confidently buried his strike past Asmir Begovic. Before the striker, who scored in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, added his second after following up his header, which was superbly saved, by calmly finishing the rebound.
