Eibar get the match underway from the kick-off!
Hello and welcome to our LIVE commentary of the LaLiga fixture between Barcelona and Eibar!
The Blaugrana are undefeated in their last six fixtures in LaLiga, though their last loss came at Camp Nou in a thrilling 4-3 defeat to Real Betis. Today's opponents have never really posed a threat to the hosts, however, losing by an aggregate score of 16-4 in their three visits to Catalonia.
Since that glorious evening at the Estadio Municipal de Ipurua, Eibar have lost to Rayo Vallecano and drawn four on the bounce. The visitors will be disadvantaged from the outset in their quest to end that run, as assistant manager Andoni Azkarrgorta will be forced to take charge on the touchline as Mendilibar is serving a one-match ban.
BARCELONA SUBS: Jeison Murillo, Ousmane Dembele, Jasper Cillessen, Nelson Semedo, Denis Suarez, Arthur, Carles Alena.
With 15 minutes to go before kick-off, the team news has been confirmed! Let's start with the home side.
EIBAR SUBS: Pere Milla, Pablo De Blasis, Paulo Oliveira, Marko Dmitrovic, Kike Garcia, Marc Cardona, Sergio Alvarez.
EIBAR XI (4-2-3-1): Asier Riesgo; Ruben Pena, Anaitaz Arbilla, Pedro Bigas, Cote; Gonzalo Escalante, Pape Diop; Fabio Orellana, Joan Jordan, Marc Cucurella; Sergi Enrich.
Eibar are one of five teams level on 22 points, though they sit favourably in 13th - second in that pack. A win today could bring Jose Luis Mendilibar’s side potentially as high as 8th, though that would mean a first victory in six since a phenomenal 3-0 win at home over Real Madrid.
Barcelona lead LaLiga after 18 matches played, with a two-point lead above Atletico Madrid in second who already took to the pitch today. With 50 goals in that time, Ernesto Valverde’s side almost doubles that of the second-highest scorers – Sevilla who are on 31. Most of that, unsurprisingly, is due to the brilliance of Lionel Messi, who has contributed 16 goals and 10 assists in 15 matches started. Should he score today, it will be his 400th in Spain's top division - an incredible achievement.
BARCELONA XI (4-3-3): Marc-Andre ter Stegen; Jordi Alba, Clement Lenglet, Gerard Pique, Sergi Roberto; Arthur, Sergio Busquets, Ivan Rakitic; Philippe Coutinho, Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi.
Barcelona have not threatened often, but they enter half-time with the lead thanks to Suarez’s clinical finish at the end of a brilliant one-two passing move, assisted by Coutinho. Eibar have held firm in defence and pressed Barcelona well, but have ceded most of the possession as the Blaugrana. The hosts could have easily been awarded for a foul on Coutinho inside the penalty area, but the referee’s view was that the forward was already on his way to ground – much to Pena’s delight as he was the defender in question. Unlucky, but the leaders look comfortable and could add to their advantage in the second.
The visitors should be fairly happy to only be down by a single goal at half-time, as they have rarely threatened Barcelona’s goalkeeper or their defence. They’ve attempted five shots but missed the target every time – with Enrich’s header narrowly over the bar the best of the bunch. With less than 40% possession and almost half of Barcelona’s total passes – Azkarrgorta will really need to influence the match from the bench with some inspired changes if he wishes to take any points at all.
That concludes our commentary of the LaLiga fixture between Barcelona and Eibar! We hope you enjoyed the fixture!
Barcelona are in Copa del Rey action on Thursday when they host the second-leg of their tie with Levante, down 2-1. Eibar will hope to snap their winless streak when they host Espanyol in LaLiga next Monday.
