Referee Antonio Lahoz blows his whistle, and Sevilla get us underway at the Ramon Sanchez-Pijuan!
The hosts are out in their usual colours of all-white, while the visitors are sporting their away apparel in all-blue.
Hello and welcome to our LIVE coverage of this LaLiga clash as Sevilla host Atletico Madrid at the Ramon Sanchez-Pijuan!
Sevilla, who sit five points behind leaders Barcelona in third, will hope to maintain their form before the mid-season break which saw them go on a run of five LaLiga matches in a row without defeat. Pablo Machin’s side have also been imperious at home as well, having only lost once in eight games on home turf so far, but will have to raise their levels up against a side that they do not have the best of records against.
Second-placed Atletico, who are only three points behind Barca, also went on a five-game unbeaten streak prior to this match and Diego Simeone will see this as another must-win game for Los Colchoneros as they look to win the league for the first time since 2013/14. However, their traditionally watertight defensive unit doesn’t look to be as strong on the road, having conceded five times in their last four away matches, and will need to be extra focused against a side that has scored 27 goals in their last 10 home fixtures.
With 15 minutes to go before kick-off, let’s take a look at how both sides line up, starting with the hosts.
SUBSTITUTES: Juan Soriano, Bryan Gil Salvatierra, Guilherme Arana, Quincy Promes, Nolito, Ibrahim Amadou, Simon Kjaer.
SEVILLA XI (3-5-2): Tomas Vaclik; Joris Gnagnon, Daniel Carrico, Sergi Gomez; Jesus Navas (c), Pablo Sarabia, Ever Banega, Roque Mesa, Sergio Escudero; Wissam Ben Yedder, Andre Silva.
ATLETICO MADRID XI (4-4-2): Jan Oblak; Juanfran, Stefan Savic, Diego Godin (c), Saul Niguez; Koke, Thomas Partey, Rodrigo, Thomas Lemar; Angel Correa, Antoine Griezmann.
SUBSTITUTES: Antonio Adan, Francisco Montero, Santiago Arias, Joaquin Munoz, Nikola Kalinic, Vitolo, Jose Gimenez.
The players are out and kick-off is drawing near as the home crowd ramp up the noise.
Sevilla will feel very hard done by after conceding just before the interval, as they had dominated their opponents throughout the half with some precise passing and explosive play down the wings from Navas and Escudero. Ben Yedder’s goal was no less than they had deserved, but Atletico’s equaliser would have been a cruel sucker-punch for Machin’s men. However, if they are able to match their first-half display after the break, then they have every chance of beating an off-colour Atletico.
Simeone will have been frustrated at his side’s first-half display as they were constantly torn apart by Sevilla’s wave of attacks, but will be breathing a sigh of relief after Griezmann’s world-class free-kick managed to even the scoreline just before the interval. El Cholo will be demanding a better display from his charges come the second half, as both sides will be seeking a win to keep the pressure on Barca at the top.
And that wraps up our coverage. We hope you enjoyed our commentary, and until next time, goodbye!
Midweek Copa del Rey action is next up for both sides, as Sevilla travel to Athletic Bilbao on Thursday while Atletico play in Girona a day before. They both play their next LaLiga matches a week from now, with Sevilla again playing Bilbao while Atletico host Levante a few hours beforehand.
