Traore is booked so soon after coming on for interfering with Ederson's drop-kick.
90' +2
B. Traoré enters the game and replaces M. Cornet.
Into the second of three added minutes and Lyon make their final change. Cornet, who has put in a sensational display at both ends tonight, is replaced by Traore.
90'
S. Agüero gets yellow.
Aguero is booked for dissent here, but it's not entirely clear what he would have to argue with the referee about.
LOPES AGAIN! That's vintage from Aguero, who uses that close control and low centre of gravity to turn atop the area and burst forward, but Lopes sprawls out to get his fingertips to the shot and push it behind! Shades of his title-winning goal against QPR in 2012, only it just lacked a finish!
89'
IT JUST NEEDED A TOUCH! Mahrez fools everyone as he cuts inside predictably onto his left for a shot, but doesn't take the chance as he twists back onto his right and instead glances in an inviting cross, but David Silva just can't get a touch on it to knock it beyond Lopes, who is able to collect!
87'
Into the final few minutes now and Lyon are holding on admirably. They're not just sitting back, but pushing forward when they win back possession, providing some important respite for the defence. Cornet and Depay have put in outstanding shifts tonight. They've covered every blade of grass, and have seemingly yet to tire.
85'
Well that is a letdown. It's Walker who takes, and he can't come anywhere near testing Lopes as his free-kick is always rising, never threatening the goal.
84'
Is this the chance for City? The architect is who else but Sane? He drives forward with a refreshingly direct burst of pace, before being tripped up just a few yards outside the penalty area. This is a great spot for a shot. Walker and Mahrez are standing over it, as Lopes gets his wall into place...
80'
Brilliant run from Cornet! That is a stunning display of skill and pace from the winger, who eludes Delph on the flank, pokes the ball beyond Laporte and pulls it back into the centre. No one is there to meet it, but a deflection takes it back to an unsuspecting Cornet, who can only tamely guide the ball to Ederson from close range.
79'
L. Tousart enters the game and replaces N. Fekir.
A second change in the span of a few minutes for the visitors as Fekir, who will be hoping his goal stands as the winner, is replaced by Tousart, a defensive midfielder.
Minute
Description
77'
N. Fekir gets yellow.
Fekir tugs back on the shirt of Delph to halt the left-back's run, and is issued a yellow card as a result.
76'
L. Dubois enters the game and replaces Rafael.
R. Mahrez enters the game and replaces R. Sterling.
Arteta, in charge tonight with Guardiola watching from the stands, is clearly mesmerised by what Sane has provided off the bench and thus elects to bring on yet another winger in Mahrez. Sterling is replaced.
Lyon's first change of the match is a straight swap at right-back, as Dubois replaces Rafael.
73'
Lyon are being forced to drop deeper and deeper in defence, as City throw everything forward but the kitchen sink. Another wonderfully worked move orchestrated by Sane leads to a big chance for Aguero, but his thunderous shot from the edge of the penalty area is saved well by Lopes.
69'
These final 20 minutes are going to feel like an eternity for Lyon, who will consider themselves even more unlucky now for not making it 3-0 on that Depay chance off the post. They really could have used that, because momentum is firmly with the hosts now.
67'
Bernardo Silva has scored a goal for Manchester City! Assist by L. Sané.
He's been on the pitch just over 10 minutes, but Sane has already made a massive impact! That's exactly what City needed.
CITY PULL ONE BACK! 2-1! Bernardo Silva hands the hosts a lifeline with a cool finish from 10 yards, but that was all in the set-up from Sane who skipped deliciously beyond two defenders before picking out the perfect pull-back for his team-mate!
65'
Frustration is growing for City. They're struggling to find their way through, and have resorted to ambitious strikes from distance. Delph forces Lopes into a save this time, but it's a straightforward one for the keeper. Still, this was a better effort than the last from Delph, which flew miles over the bar.
63'
S. Agüero enters the game and replaces Gabriel Jesus.
A hero's reception for Aguero as he's introduced for the final 25 minutes, with Jesus replaced. The Brazilian striker has been far from his best tonight.
60'
THAT WOULD HAVE SEALED IT! Depay sprints behind the defence and bends an effort towards the far post, with Ederson getting the slightest of touches to turn it onto the inside of the post! It's a terrific save, but City are all out of sorts in defence! That would have sealed the points for the visitors!
58'
Well you would expect a bit better there from Jesus, who gets free at the far post to meet the ensuing delivery, but heads well wide of the target.
57'
City are looking brighter now, as they've adopted much more urgency to their approach. Everyone is forward now in this all-hands-on-deck situation, but they're struggling still to break down this well organised and determined Lyon defence. They have a free-kick just to the right of the penalty area here, though, as Mendy commits a foul.
55'
L. Sané enters the game and replaces İ. Gündoğan.
A first change of the night for City sees them bring Sane on for an added threat in attack, with Gundogan the one replaced.
54'
TERRIFIC GOALKEEPING! Lopes is able to dive back to his right, when his momentum was taking him to the left, and get down in a flash to not just save, but also hold onto Jesus' well-struck effort from 20 yards, which took a wicked deflection off Denayer!
50'
It will be very interesting to see how Lyon approach this second half. They were very positive in the opening 45 minutes, and were rewarded for their ambition. But with a 2-0 lead to their name, will they chose to sit back a bit more and defend? It could get rather difficult for them if they elect to do so.
48'
Aguero is warming up for City, and you can bet it won't be long before he's introduced. The hosts also have Sane and Mahrez to turn to off the bench should they wish - and it might become necessity for them if they can't find a goal soon.
46'
No changes from either side at the break as Manchester City get the second half underway. A crucial 45 minutes ahead for them.
45' +1
HALF-TIME: MANCHESTER CITY 0-2 LYON.
45'
There will be just one minute added on at the end of this first half.
43'
N. Fekir has scored a goal for Lyon! Assist by M. Depay.
Depay did well to pick out the run of Fekir there, but that was all in the confidence and finish of the France international.
THE SHOCK IS REALLY ON NOW! 2-0 LYON! An absolutely sublime individual effort from Fekir! The forward bursts forward, fending off two defenders as he gets just enough of a site of goal and takes it brilliantly, driving a sensational strike back across goal and into the bottom corner! Ederson had no chance!
40'
PENALTY APPEALS DENIED! The Etihad lets out a collective chorus of boos after Rafael impeded the path of Jesus and quite clearly tripped up the striker in the penalty area! The referee was right there and had a great look at it, so it's even more surprising he hasn't given it!
38'
Some concentrated pressure from City here as they set up camp in the final third. Laporte shows good footwork in the penalty area, but is unable to get his shot through. Pressure stays on, and Fernandinho wins a free-kick as he's dragged down by Fekir on the end of a smart, darting run.
36'
This is turning into a terrific watch, with Cornet's breakthrough doing wonders to help open the match up. The tempo has picked up in a big way, and both sides are doing a wonderful job of getting forward at every opportunity.
34'
Back and forth they go at the Etihad! Lyon break on the counter and Fekir sends an off-balance shot wide of the near post. Back the other way come City, but Lopes does really well yet again to react to a harshly deflected shot from 25 yards!
32'
OFFSIDE! Well Lyon were denied a goal at the other end by an offside flag, and now City suffer the same fate! Sterling picks out a lovely cutback for Gundogan, who slots home confidently from eight yards, but the forward was just offside in the build-up!
28'
That's a deserved goal no doubt about it for Lyon. They have been beaming with confidence since kick-off, and have been justly rewarded for their positive approach. There's some increasing restlessness in the Etihad now, as frustration, which has been building throughout, has come to a head following that Cornet opener.
26'
M. Cornet has scored a goal for Lyon! Assist by N. Fekir.
WELL THAT WASN'T IN THE SCRIPT! 1-0 LYON! Guardiola looks on from the stands as shockwaves are sent through the Etihad! Fekir's cross should have been cleared at the far post, but Delph gets all tangled and fails to touch it away from danger, allowing Cornet to latch onto the end of it and drive a terrific finish back across goal and into the bottom corner!
It was the right idea from Fekir, as he provides the assist, but Delph really should have dealt with that.
25'
Full credit to Lyon, who have come to play here tonight. They're showing great ambition, with no signs of being content sitting back and congesting things in defence. They're really in the ascendency here, looking a consistent threat when they get forward.
23'
OFFSIDE! Well that is a massive relief for City! NDombele plays a stunning ball through for Cornet, who rounds Ederson and finishes superbly, but the flag is raised! The replay shows just how close it really was. There wasn't more than a few inches in it, but it does appear to just be the right decision.
21'
FINE SAVE! Sterling remains a focal point in attack for City, and he's come close once again to opening the score with an effort from 15 yards that takes a deflection off Marcelo on the way through, but Lopes reacts splendidly to make the save! Back the other way come Lyon, and they win themselves a corner.
17'
OFF THE BAR! Another vital contribution from Denayer, who blocks Sterling's effort behind on the end of a terrific move. The ensuing corner is played short before being whipped in to the far post, but Laporte can only head off the woodwork from a tight angle!
15'
The visitors look more than up for the occasion, and boast a plethora of players who look quite strong on the ball. Their interplay could use some improvement, but they certainly aren't lacking in confidence or ambition.
13'
Sterling puts in some more good work on the left flank to evade two defenders, but the final ball is a letdown as his cross is nowhere close to threatening, rolling tamely behind for a goal kick. Full credit to Lyon as well, who are showing an appetite to get forward when they get possession back.
11'
City's first threatening attack of the evening comes down the left flank, but Denayer does really well to turn the cross away from danger. The hosts are just starting to take control now. Pressure stays on after some more strong build-up play, as Marcelo heads straight to Sterling, but the forward's shot smacks into the side netting.
7'
Lyon are really asserting themselves in midfield in this early going, keeping the ball quite well and just frustrating the hosts a bit. The Ligue 1 outfit have won a couple free-kicks with some smart hold-up play, and they're doing an excellent job of preventing City from getting into any sort of rhythm.
5'
It has not been a lively start by any means, with both sides seeing their fair share of possession, but it's all coming in the defensive half for the most part. The two teams are just trying to settle in and get their footing - surely the tempo will pick up soon enough.
3'
Pep Guardiola is of course not allowed to communicate with the team tonight, as he watches on from the stands. He's there because after being sent to the stands in last season's quarter-final against Liverpool, he influenced a substitution to be made, when he was supposed to have no communication with the touchline. He serves a one-match ban tonight as a result.
1'
AND THEY'RE OFF! Lyon in orange as they get the match underway, with Manchester City in their classic sky blue and white!
Hello and welcome to live coverage of this Champions League match as Manchester City welcome Lyon to the Etihad, with both clubs kicking off their European campaigns!
Just about everything broke Manchester City’s way in their historic 2017/18 season, with the exception of the Champions League as they were ousted by English rivals Liverpool in the quarter-final, proving just how difficult European football is for even the most accomplished of clubs.
Pep Guardiola’s side are gunning for redemption this year, and they look a well-oiled machine once again. A group with Lyon, Shakhtar and Hoffenheim should give them a good chance of finishing at the summit, setting the scene for a deep run in the competition.
Lyon ended last season on an incredible run, but they have not been able to carry that momentum through to this campaign, as they have opened the domestic season with just two victories from their first five matches.
The away form of Bruno Genesio’s side is worrisome, losing 1-0 to newly promoted Reims and drawing 2-2 against Caen, who finished a point above the drop last season. It’s not an ideal time to be making a trip to Manchester.
CONFIRMED TEAM NEWS:
MANCHESTER CITY (4-3-3): Ederson; Kyle Walker, John Stones, Aymeric Laporte, Fabian Delph; Ilkay Gundogan, Fernandinho, David Silva; Bernardo Silva, Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus.
SUBS: Arijanet Muric, Nicolas Otamendi, Vincent Kompany, Leroy Sane, Phil Foden, Riyad Mahrez, Sergio Aguero.
LYON (4-2-3-1): Anthony Lopes; Rafael, Marcelo, Jason Denayer, Ferland Mendy; Tanguy NDombele, Pape Cheikh Diop; Maxwel Cornet, Nabil Fekir, Houssem Aouar; Memphis Depay.
SUBS: Moussa Dembele, Jordan Ferri, Jeremy Morel, Leo Dubois, Mathieu Gorgelin, Bertrand Traore, Lucas Tousart.
Despite picking up a knock at the weekend, Aguero does make the bench tonight, with Gabriel Jesus leading the line. Sane is on the bench as well despite scoring in his first start of the season on Saturday, with Sterling and Bernardo Silva flanking Jesus. Delph starts at left-back with Mendy injured, while it's Laporte who is chosen to partner Stones, ahead of Kompany and Otamendi.
Lyon are fielding a conservative XI, with Traore and Dembele both on the bench, as Depay is picked as the lone striker. Denayer didn't play a single match in five years with Manchester City, but gets to make his first start at the Etihad tonight as he partners Marcelo in defence. Diop and NDombele pack the punch in midfield, with Fekir providing the link between midfield and attack.
A shock on the cards at the Etihad as Lyon are halfway towards a massive upset thanks to goals from Maxwel Cornet and Nabil Fekir. It's been a brilliant end-to-end contest through 45 minutes, but the Ligue 1 outfit have been clinical on the front foot, while some expert last-ditch defending has helped keep City out at the other end.
The Premier League champions head into the break to a chorus of boos, which may also be directed at the Italian referee after Jesus was denied what looked a clear penalty shortly before the break. Lyon are fully deserving of this lead, but with the way City are capable of scoring goals, this one is still far from over.
Manchester City will try and right the ship when they visit Hoffenheim in two weeks, while Lyon will look to make it six points from six as they return home to take on Shakhtar Donetsk. That's all for our live coverage, thanks for following along. Goodbye!
A famous night for Lyon as they come into the home of the Premier League champions and leave with all three points! Pep Guardiola, serving a one-match ban, could only watch on from the stands as Maxwel Cornet and Nabil Fekir provided the visitors with a shocking 2-0 lead in the first half, and while City threw everything forward after the break, Bernardo Silva's goal would prove nothing more than consolation as their comeback falls short.
