Hello and welcome to this live text commentary of the World Cup last-16 match between Brazil and Mexico in Russia.
It took time for Brazil to kick into the gear at the 2018 World Cup, but Tite's men were impressive in their 2-0 win over Serbia last time out to secure top spot in Group E. Brazil had struggled in their opener drawing 1-1 with Switzerland before needing two late strikes to see off Costa Rica courtesy of Philippe Coutinho and Neymar. However, they controlled the contest against the Serbs to advance into the round-of-16.
Mexico's poor performance against Sweden almost cost them a place in the round-of-16. Had Germany beaten South Korea, El Tri would have been eliminated from the competition. Fortunately for Mexico, Die Mannschaft's late collapse allowed them to advance, although they're now staring down the prospect of a seventh-straight loss in the first knockout phase. Juan Carlos Osorio's men were outstanding in their opener against Germany and will need that level of performance this afternoon.
Let's take a look at the two teams this afternoon, starting with Brazil.
BRAZIL (4-3-3): Alisson; Fagner, Thiago Silva, Miranda, Filipe Luis; Paulinho, Casemiro, Philippe Coutinho; Willian, Gabriel Jesus, Neymar.
MEXICO (4-3-3): Guillermo Ochoa; Edson Alvarez, Hugo Ayala, Carlos Salcedo, Jesus Gallerdo; Hector Herrera, Rafael Marquez, Andres Guardado; Carlos Vela, Javier Hernandez, Hirving Lozano.
Mexico subs: Jesus Corona, Erick Gutierrez, Jonathan dos Santos, Miguel Layun, Marco Fabian, Raul Jimenez, Giovani dos Santos, Alfredo Talavera, Jesus Manuel Corona, Oribe Peralta, Javier Aquino.
Marcelo has not been passed fit for this afternoon's contest after suffering back spasms in Brazil's win over Serbia. Filipe Luis comes into the side at left-back in place of the Real Madrid man. Other than that Tite has named the same side that defeated Serbia, keeping with the front three of Willian, Neymar and Jesus ahead of Firmino on the bench.
Mexico are without Hector Moreno in the middle of their defence after he picked up his second booking of the tournament during the defeat to Sweden. Ayala takes his place in the back four, while Marquez comes into the side to replace Layun in the middle of the park. His experience could be vital for El Tri this afternoon.
The players are out on the pitch. It's time for the anthems.
It's all square at the break between Brazil and Mexico at the Samara Arena. El Tri made a bright start to the game, but as the half wore on Brazil upped the ante as Neymar and Gabriel Jesus were both denied by Guillermo Ochoa. Still neither side has done enough to make the breakthough, leaving the contest in the balance.
It took time for Neymar to find his rhythm, but he started to have an effect towards the end of the half. Edson Alvarez went into the book for a challenge on the PSG forward, which could be an interesting contest to watch in the second half.
Thanks for joining our commentary this afternoon. Until next time, goodbye.
Brazil secure their place in the quarter-finals for the seventh World Cup in a row thanks to second-half goals from Neymar and Roberto Firmino. The Selecao upped the ante in the second half to put Mexico under duress, and their quality in the final third was the difference between the two sides. Neymar was effective down the flank, while Willian also played his part in securing the victory. El Tri had early success, but ran out of ideas quickly as they failed to pose a threat in the second period.
Mexico crash out of the tournament at the round-of-16 stage for the seventh time in a row. Once again there will be no fifth game for El Tri. On the other side Tite and his players will be watching Belgium take on Japan later today. The winner will advance to face Neymar and company in the quarter-finals.
