Hello and welcome to Goal's LIVE commentary of Canada vs. El Salvador. I'm Nick Sabetti (@NickSabetti) and I'll be taking you through today's action.
In the last game of the fourth round of CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying here's where things stand in Group I: In first place, Mexico has already booked a place in the Hexagonal stage with a perfect 15 points from five games; Honduras is in second with seven points; Canada is in third with four points; and El Salvador is in fourth with two points and has been eliminated from the next round. To finish second ahead of Honduras, Canada will not only need to beat El Salvador tonight and hope that Mexico beats Honduras, they will also need to make up the +5 goal difference lead that Honduras has currently. So the Reds will certainly be looking for goals tonight in Vancouver, and will also be counting on Mexico to bang in several as well.
Here's Canada's starting eleven for tonight's game: Borjan, Hutchinson, Ledgerwood, James, Henry, Hoilett, Ricketts, Straith, Arfield, de Jong and Larin.
And El Salvador's: Arroyo; Tamacas, Romero, Domínguez, Larín; Ó. Cerén, D. Cerén, Punyed, Alas, Barahona; Bonilla
1-0 for Canada at the break. The hosts have had several good chances to add to their lead, but just haven't been clinical enough. And with the Mexico - Honduras game still tied at 0-0, it's not looking good for Canada at the moment.
The whistle blows and that's it for Canada. They beat El Salvador 3-1, but it's not enough. Canada finishes third in Group I and will miss out on the World Cup in 2018. They needed more goals, and certainly created enough opportunities, but in any event, it wouldn't have mattered since Honduras held on for a draw in Mexico. A disappointing night for the Reds.
