Grings leads Germany past Iceland

Jonathan Roorda - 30 August 2009 20:22

Inka Grings scored the only goal but came off injured minutes later

Germany won their final group match against Iceland 1-0, but won't be as happy as they could have been as goalscorer Inka Grings came off injury and may miss the quarter finals.

Silvia Neid planned to have Birgit Prinz play the first half and Inka Grings the second, and initially this tactic worked out well as Grings scored the opening -and only- goal from a Bajramaj cross in the 50th minute.

But the striker later collided with Iceland keeper Gunnarsdottit and was replaced with Celia Okoyino da Mbabi.

Following the game, Neid didn't know how serious Grings' injury is: "We hope she will be fine for Friday's game as she is, obviously, a very important player, but we are a team with 22 players, there's not one star."

The Germans finish first in Group B, while Iceland are at the bottom after three consecutive defeats. Nevertheless, manager Siggi Eyjolfsson said to be "proud" of his players' performance in the country's first ever major finals.
