CHONGQING, China (AFP) - Kim Yong-Ae struck twice as Asia number one North Korea overwhelmed South Korea 4-0 for their first win on the final day of the East Asian women's championship Sunday.
After a scoreless deadlock at half-time, North Korea erupted with Kim opening the scoring when she kicked in her own rebound at the goalmouth in the 53rd minute. Hong Myong-Gum headed in a right cross in the 68th minute and Ri Kum-Suk, Asian Player of the Year, did the same three minutes later. Kim wrapped up the scoring binge in the 78th minute when she kicked in a grounding cross at the goalmouth, beating out South Korean goalkeeper Kim Jung-Mi. North Korea drew 0-0 with China, fellow quarter-finalists at the World Cup in China last September, and lost 3-2 to Japan earlier in the four-nation round-robin. South Korea, the winners of the inaugural women's tournament at home in 2005, failed to win a match. Undefeated Japan were to clash with host China, who stood with one win and one draw, later in the day. Both North Korea and Japan are using this tournament as a testing ground ahead of the Beijing Olympics in August where the Steel Roses play as host. South Korea did not qualify for the Games. |
