ZURICH, Switzerland (AFP) - Germany has been selected to host the women's 2011 World Cup, FIFA announced Tuesday.

Germany, who hosted the 2006 men's World Cup, was chosen over Canda with three other countries - Peru, Mexico and Australia - earlier withdrawing their candidacies.

World champions in 2003 and at this year's tournament in China, the German women's team will be favourites for the 2011 competition.

"It's a unique opportunity, a proof of confidence for a country like Germany which is very happy to be able to again welcome you in 2011," said German sports minister Ursula Von der Leyden.

"I think it's important for women's football. It provides a new momentum for women's football".
