The tall forward fouls Delio Toledo and becomes player number three in referee Rodriguez' administration.

A Bonet cross from the right side is misjudged by Robinson, and the ends right in front of Carlos Paredes. Paraguay's number 13 fails to take advantage however and strikes well over the crossbar.

Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole delivers a low shot on goal, but goalkeeper Bobadilla saves.

56th minute - England substitution

Off: 10 - Owen
Striker Michael Owen comes off for England's first substitution, and is replaced by Stewart Downing. Eriksson seems to focus on defending the small lead.

England need to focus as Paraguay increase the pressure. But it doesn't last long and no real chances are created.

HALF-TIME
Not the most entertaining first half. After England's opening goal, with help from Paraguay skipper Gamarra, not much happened at the Commerzbank-Arena.

Paraguay manager Anibal Ruiz will need to find a way to inspire his team ahead of the second half.

Paraguay finally show some fighting spirit. Nelson Valdez shoots from the edge of the area and the ball goes only just wide.

Caceres fouls Peter Crouch and the referee gives England a free kick. This time, Beckham's attempt is less lethal and the ball is cleared.

Paraguay get a free kick on the right wing, as Ashley Cole fouls Nelson Valdez. The English defense easily clears however, and the Paraguayans just can't get dangerous in front of Robinson's goal.

England still spend most of their time attacking, and whenever Paraguay get the ball, the pace inmediately slows down.

Gerrard is down on the pitch after a Paredes foul, and looks to be in real pain. The player is holding his knee for a moment, but gets back up and continues.

The referee is making sure he's being noticed. Valdez fouls Beckham and is the second player to get booked.

The Liverpool midfielder is given a yellow card for a foul on Paredes.

Bobadilla takes too much time for his goal kick, and referee Rodríguez calls for a free kick. Beckham's strike hits the wall.

England continue to dominate. Steven Gerrard tries a shot from outside the penalty area but the ball goes over the bar.

Things surely cannot get much worse for Paraguay as first goalkeeper Justo Villa is injured, and replaced with Aldo Bobadilla. It's the earlier keepers substitution ever at a World Cup.

A desastrous start for Paraguay! A David Beckham free kick, taken from a large distance, is slightly touched by captain Carlos Gamarra and the ball goes straight into Villar's goal.

Steven Gerrard is declared fit and joins Lampard, Joe Cole and David Beckham in midfield. Coach Eriksson selected both Michael Owen and Peter Crouch to lead the attack.
