LONDON, Feb 22 (SW) - Arsenal finally made it through to meet Charlton Athletic in the semi-finals of the Woman’s FA Cup. On a heavy pitch and driving rain they turned in another six-goal display against Chelsea, in they're rearranged Quarter Final.
In their last match, a league game against Sunderland they also fired in six goals but made heavy weather of the first half. Against Chelsea however they were quick off the blocks and were one up in five minutes. After good work on the right by Lianne Sanderson, she wriggled past Edwards before sending a low cross bouncing and bobbling into the area. It was met by Rachel Yankey who pushed the ball to her side, taking it away from the defender before sending it past Collie and just inside the far post. Arsenal had more injury worries on 20 minutes when Leanne Champ had to come off with a knee injury. With Faye White already out with an injury it wasn't good news for the league run in. Arsenal battled on however and they were two up on 34 minutes when Rachel Yankey pushed on down the left sending in a long pass which was flicked on by Asante into the path of Lianne Sanderson who knocked it in from three yards. Then Julie Fleeting pushed forward riding a tackle before passing to Kelly Smith on the edge of the box. Smith took a couple of touches to get past Thornton then send arching shot into the right hand corner. Chelsea worked away and gave themselves some hope just before the break when Jayne Ludlow made heavy weather of dealing with a cross and Sophie Perry nipped in to fire past Emma Burns. In the second half Arsenal got back into their stride again and put the match beyond doubt soon after the restart. Rachel Yankey send a cross in from the right which Fleeting stretched for but just missed getting a foot on it. The ball however broke to Kelly Smith who’s shot was deflected past the keeper by a luckless Delfes. The match dropped down a key after this with Fleeting and Yankey breaking into the Chelsea defence with the final ball being scrammed away. Towards the end however Julie Fleeting finally got a break. Tarring into the area she fought off the close attentions of Downham before sending her shot over the advancing keeper and into the net. The Scotland star then rounded things off a minute later when she latched onto a Smith lay off and lashed a shot past keeper Collie. With the Fulham-Sunderland Premier match being called off due to a waterlogged pitch and other sides busy with local County Cup ties, there was no change in the league standings. Chelsea – Arsenal 1-6 (1-3) Referee: Bailey, Attendance: 340 Goals: 6. Yankey 0-1, 34. Sanderson 0-2, 42. Smith 0-3, 43. Perry 1-3, 56. Delfes (own goal) 1-4, 75. Fleeting 1-5, 76. Fleeting 1-6 |
