CARDIFF, Apr 14 (SW) - Sheffield United might only be one day from promotion to the Premiership after they defeated Cardiff City on Friday. Elsewhere, Watford's automatic promotion hopes were ended at Wolves.

Cardiff City - Sheffield United 0-1

The visitors looked far from comfortable at Ninian Park and faced some good spells of pressure early from the Welsh side, but the home side's only true chance came in the 25th minute as Steven Thompson headed narrowly wide of the goal following a pinpoint cross by Jason Koumas.

United took advantage of a horrendous backpass by Cameron Jerome in the 76th minute, Danny Webber hitting a magnificent shot beyond Bluebirds goalkeeper Neil Alexander for a 1-0 lead.

The Blades can now secure promotion if Leeds United drop points against champions Reading at Elland Road on Saturday. If Leeds win, United will secure promotion with a point in any of their remaining three matches.

Wolverhampton - Watford 1-1

Wolves dominated the first 45 minutes of the game at Molineux and were in front on 18 minutes as Jeremie Aliadière converted a low pass by striker Tomasz Frankowski.

Watford found themselves level in the 65th minute as Marlon King found a ball that no one wanted and hit a cracking shot beyond Stefan Postma for the equalizer. King, though, didn't finish the game as he was sent off five minutes from time.

Watford cannot catch Sheffield United for automatic promotion, but assured of a spot in the four-team playoff for the final spot in the 2006/07 English Premier League.
