34'
Half-hearted pleas for an Atalanta penalty! The ball pinballs around the Milan box dangerously before eventually falling to Conti, who tries to shoot but goes down whilst battling with De Sciglio. We're off! Atalanta get us underway, attacking from right to left.
Good evening and welcome to our live text commentary of today’s Serie A game between Atalanta and AC Milan at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia.
With just three games left to play, the final Lombardy derby of the season represents a great chance for both sides to make one last push towards European qualification. Six points currently separate the two teams, meaning that a win here today for Milan would hand them an opportunity to overtake their opponents and qualify for the group stage of the Europa League.
Thanks to Juventus and Lazio both making it to the final of the Coppa Italia, ending the season in sixth place would be enough to see Milan feature in a European competition for the first time since 2014. It would also represent their highest finish since 2013, and, as an added bonus, would deny their rivals Inter a place in the Europa League that they also desperately crave.
Today’s clash won’t be easy, however, as the Rossoneri must face an Atalanta side that have impressed all season long. Gian Piero Gasperini has done an excellent job with La Dea, and they’re currently on course to match their best Serie A finish since 1948. With five points separating themselves and Lazio, they could still catch the club from the capital, and they’ll certainly be confident about their chances of picking up at least two victories from their final three games.
The two sides certainly face each other in the middle of very different runs of form. For Atalanta, they’re unbeaten in their last seven league games - including important draws against both Roma and Juventus - whilst an end of season slump has seen Milan fail to win any of their previous four. Disappointing results against Empoli and Crotone were followed by a 4-1 thumping at home to Roma last weekend, and they’ll have to bounce back quickly if they’re to have any chance of returning to winning ways this evening.
There’s just over 15 minutes left to go until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this evening…
Milan substitutes: Honda, Fernandez, Poli, Vangioni, Sosa, Storari, Plizzari, Gabbia, Bacca, Locatelli, Bertolacci, Calabria.
Milan XI (3-5-2): Donnarumma; Gomez, Zapata, Romagnoli; Kucka, Suso, Montolivo, Pasalic, De Sciglio; Deulofeu, Lapadula.
Gian Piero Gasperini has decided to make three changes to the Atalanta side that started the draw away to Udinese seven days ago, with Andrea Conti, Franck Kessie and Remo Freuler coming into the starting line-up to replace Cristian Raimondi, Alberto Grassi and Jasmin Kurtic, respectively.
Meanwhile, Milan boss Vincenzo Montella has also made three alterations to the team that featured in their last outing, with Leonel Vangioni, Mattia Fernandez and Jose Sosa making way for Gustavo Gomez, Juraj Kucka and Ricardo Montolivo, the latter of whom is set to make his first appearance since October. The Rossoneri’s switch to three at the back is not only a rare deviation away from Montella’s preferred 4-3-3 formation but also represents the first time they’ve used the system since October 2012.
The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
HALF-TIME: ATALANTA 1-0 MILAN
So far, so good for Atalanta, who have been on the front foot for most of the game so far and deservedly head into the half-time break with a one-goal lead. Milan are clearly set up to sit deep and defend, and that goal for the home side means that Montella will have to do some tactical tinkering if the Rossoneri are going to have any chance of getting back into the game in the second half.
The two teams are making their way back out on to the pitch ahead of the start of the second half. Neither side have made any substitutions during the half-time break.
FULL-TIME: ATALANTA 1-1 MILAN
Milan weren't at their best this evening and left it late to finally find the back of the net, but they're able to leave with the point that they came to achieve. Atalanta were the better of the two sides for most of the evening but were arguably guilty of sitting too deep in the second half, allowing Milan to progressively put more pressure on them as they started to find more joy in front of goal. In the end, the Rossoneri were finally able to break down their determined opponents, who started to leave pockets of space available as they began to tire.
